Freedom Of The Press Must Be Upheld In Tunisia

The freedom to express oneself and impart information and ideas through any media are fundamental human rights. Freedom of the press is - alongside a strong civil society - an essential means of holding power to account and giving voice to the community.

It is unacceptable that journalists in Tunisia report being subjected to harassment, intimidation and violence carried out by the authorities. Where fundamental rights are violated, there must be investigation and accountability. We support the Syndicat National des Journalistes Tunisiens in their call for an investigation by the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression.
