There must be justice and accountability for the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh
We are appalled by the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh in a raid by Israeli forces this morning.
Her murder is an obscene attack on the free press, and yet another violation carried out by the forces of occupation.
Shireen Abu Akleh had born witness and reported on many of the crimes of the occupation. She was a familar and trusted voice for Palestinians and viewers across the world, a well-respected and diligent journalist. There must be accountability for her killing, and we call on the international community to join condemnation of this crime.
It is the duty and role of journalists to bring the world’s attention to injustice, to prevent the excesses and abuses of power from being hidden. Shireen Abu Akleh shone a light onto the reality of occupation and the misery it unleashes into the lives of Palestinians on a daily basis.
The brutal silencing of Shireen Abu Akleh must shame the world into taking action to hold the perpetrators accountable, and to finally ending the occupation of Palestine.
