Principles and Priorities for Feminist Foreign Policy
Feminist Foreign Policy (FFP) presents an opportunity to prioritize peace, gender equality, and environmental integrity in a state’s interactions with other nations and non-state actors. However, the potential of political rhetoric and the reality of policy implementation are two very different things. This policy paper sets out principles and priorities for FFP developed through consultation with activists from across the Arab region.
Beijing +30: Global Feminism and the Arab Revolutions
As governments and activists gather at the 69th Commission on the Status of Women to review progress on the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, Karama publishes reflections from our partners in Africa and the Arab region. The midpoint between today and the Beijing conference also falls at the beginning of a period of huge social unrest, instability and change for there region. Our document explores the impact of the rise of global feminism and the Arab revolutions, and the impact for women and girls.
Syria: Challenges to rebuilding the State
The rapid collapse of the Syrian regime leaves many questions about the immediate and medium-term future. To explore emerging issues, Karama convened a discussion including voices from across Syria. This paper outlines points that emerged from that discussion.
Uniting Women’s Civil Society in Sudan
Between the coup that brought down Sudan’s transitional government and the outbreak of the civil war, Karama carried out work across Sudan to explore how Sudanese women’s civil society could build a unified national platform. We explore the lessons from that work and how they might be taken forward.
Women bridging Peace, Security and Humanitarian Action
In order to achieve sustainable development, peace and security, and meet humanitarian needs, more emphasis is being put on the ‘nexus’ of these areas of work. This report explores the nexus of the women, peace & security agenda and humanitarian action, looking at complementarity, practical and conceptual barriers, and reflects on the crisis of confidence in the international system in light of the war in Gaza.

A handbook civil society groups providing an overview of two key international frameworks for women and girls affected by conflict. Available in both Arabic and English, the handbook was updated in 2023 to cover all ten WPS resolutions, as well as developments like the Global Study and WPS-HA Compact. Download it here

A collaboration between UNICEF, the Wa’ed network for adolescent girls, and Karama, this advocacy brief explores the impact of climate change on girls in the Arab region and Africa, and outlines actions that need to be taken.

A remarkable collaboration between over 60 Yemeni women’s groups, this shadow report was presented to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. More than 60 recommendations made in the shadow report were endorsed by the CEDAW Committee.
