It was in Somalia that many of the principles and practices were first honed. Our approach to activism, movement building and peacebuilding and still owes a huge amount to the activities our founder Hibaaq Osman first tried in peace building between communities in her homeland of Somalia.

Having led activism and political strategy globally, Hibaaq Osman founded Karama as the civil society network for women activists in the Arab world in 2005.

As the Africa Director for Equality Now, Faiza Mohamed has supported the activism of women across the continent. Work to ensure implementation of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa has been a particular priority.
