In memory of our friend and feminist hero, Gloria Steinem

The Karama network is profoundly saddened by the death of our friend and feminist hero, Gloria Steinem. 

A woman who carved her own path and, through her own efforts and hard work, made herself a global figure as a feminist, activist, journalist, and author, Gloria was a true friend to our network. Throughout her life, Gloria remained generous with her time, her insights, and with her efforts to ensure women and girls from across the world had opportunities to have their voices heard.

We are deeply grateful for the friendship and solidarity that Gloria showed to our network. Having established herself as one of the most celebrated and recognizable feminists in the United States and indeed the world, Gloria was determined to use her platform to support and shine a light on the work of global equality activism. When our partners spoke during the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations in 2016, Gloria generously chaired our discussion with activists from Libya, Syria, and Yemen.

Gloria was a dear friend, beautiful inside and out. We mourn and celebrate the memory of a true one off, whose intelligence, charm, glamor, wisdom, and kindness shone through. Despite her fame, Gloria remained a woman of the people, for whose work we are thankful.
